Prayagraj. Allahabad High Court has cancelled the sentence of SP MP Afzal Ansari from Ghazipur. Ghazipur MP-ML court had sentenced Afzal Ansari to 4 years in prison under the Gangster Act registered after the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai. Due to this, Afzal lost his membership of Parliament. Afzal had challenged the lower court’s decision in the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court had stayed the sentence and advised Ansari to first go to the High Court. Now the High Court has overturned the lower court’s decision. Last Thursday, the High Court had reserved the decision. Afzal had asked the court to cancel the sentence, while Krishnanand’s son Piyush Rai and the government had appealed to increase the sentence. A single bench of Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh of the High Court has given this decision.
