JNU student Umar Khalid did not get relief from trial court

Former JNU scholar Umar Khalid, who is facing charges of conspiracy in the Delhi riots case, has received a big setback from the court. He had filed a bail plea before the trial court, but his bail plea was rejected. The court of Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai in Delhi’s Kakardoma Court has rejected Umar Khalid’s bail plea. Citing change in circumstances, Umar Khalid withdrew his bail plea from the Supreme Court on 14 February 2024. After this he knocked the door of the trial court.

The Supreme Court bench of Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice Pankaj Mithal was scheduled to hear the case on February 14 when Umar Khalid’s lawyer, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, informed the court that the bail plea was being withdrawn. According to a Bar and Bench report, lawyer Kapil Sibal had said that due to the change in circumstances, we want to withdraw from it and approach the trial court for relief. He had applied for bail in the trial court Kakardoma, but yesterday the trial court’s additional sessions judge Sameer Bajpai gave a big blow to Umar Khalid by rejecting his bail plea.

It is worth noting that Umar Khalid was arrested in September 2020 and has been in jail since then, charged with criminal conspiracy, rioting, unlawful assembly as well as several other offences under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The lower court had earlier refused to grant bail to Khalid in March 2022. He then approached the High Court, which also refused to grant him relief in October 2022. After this, he filed an appeal in the Supreme Court.
