‘Jamaat Islami’ will take responsibility of the people who became homeless in the ‘Wayanad tragedy’ until they get their homes

Until the government makes permanent arrangements for the Wayanad victims, Jamaat Islami will make arrangements for their accommodation. This announcement has been made by the Kerala unit of Jamaat Islami. It is worth mentioning that Jamaat Islami has been active for the victims of the Wayanad landslide accident from the very first day. Now Jamaat has announced a special project of Rs 10 crore for the Wayanad victims.

After the devastating landslide in Wayanad, Kerala, the state and central governments are busy in relief work and rehabilitation of the local people.
P. Mujibur Rahman, Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Kerala has announced a grant of Rs 10 crore for the rehabilitation of the victims. The first phase of this project has already begun.

At a press conference held at the Jamaat’s Kerala headquarters, Mujibur Rahman said until the government makes arrangements for permanent residential facilities for the victims, dialysis patients, bedridden, senior citizens and other vulnerable people, the Jamaat Kerala will provide temporary camps.

Apart from this, education from primary to higher secondary is being arranged for the students in collaboration with ‘Rahma School’ of Kodiyathur, and higher education facilities will also be provided in collaboration with ‘Integrated Education Council of India’ (IECI). Additional scholarships will be given to the affected students. Employment opportunities will also be created for the economic improvement of the victims.

Kerala Deputy Amir MK Muhammad Ali, Secretary Shahab Pokotuur and Relief Cell Coordinator Shabbir Kodoli were also present at the press conference.
Let us tell you that this incident of landslide in Wayanad took place on 30 July 2024, which affected areas like Chorlamala, Mathanga, Mandakai etc. Among them, Mandakai faced the biggest disaster. An area of about 47.37 km of Mapadi Gram Panchayat has been affected by this disaster, leaving both local residents and outside laborers homeless. The extent of this devastation can be gauged from the fact that the death toll has reached more than 400 so far. Many are still not known. It is feared that the bodies are buried under the debris, in such a situation the number can reach 550 to 600.
Jamaat working from day one
Jamaat-e-Islami Hind-Kerala’s ‘Ideal Relief Wing’ (IRW) was the first NGO to come forward to provide services to all the victims.
The Jamaat immediately deployed its volunteers here, distributing over 500 emergency kits. Meanwhile, 50 freezers were made available to the government to preserve the bodies found. The survivors were taken to government camps, distributing over five hundred camp kits.
Also, the victims were helped by providing psychological counselling through the Ethical Medical Forum and Student Medical Group. The Jamaat played an important role in expediting the rehabilitation of the victims by relocating the survivors, providing ration kits and arranging new accommodation.
