Hezbollah has confirmed the killing of its top commander Fouad Shukur in a surprise Israeli attack in Beirut on Tuesday. The Iran-backed group had earlier said that its commander Fouad Shukur was inside the building in the attack and that the rubble was being searched to determine his condition. Hezbollah’s announcement came at a time when Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was also killed in an overnight attack in Tehran. Hamas and Iran have blamed Israel for Haniyeh’s death.
Israel killed Shukur on Tuesday. Shukur is said to have been behind a rocket attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights region that killed 12 young men. The US had accused Shukur of plotting the 1983 bombing of the Marine Corps barracks in Lebanon that killed 241 American soldiers. According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, at least five civilians, including two children and three women, were killed in the attack on Beirut.
